This week we had our first field trip!! We went to the Decatur Safety Park to learn about Pedestrian safety. Our school resource officer Ed Kutch taught us how to cross the street safely and even helped us practice in the Safety Village! They loved driving the 4-wheelers and practicing obeying traffic signals and signs (let's just say it's a good thing we have 10 more years before they start thinking about driving on the roads 😳). Be sure to quiz your child on some of the rules for crossing the road and being safe around busy streets.
This is an important conversation you should have with your child regularly. We started our apple day with unit in Mrs. Beer's room. She taught us the life cycle of an apple, and many other fun facts about apples. We wrote about apples for our quarterly writing prompt. In the afternoon we made apple pie play-doh (WARNING: it does not TASTE like apple pie 😝). We ended our day with an apple tasting. We tried many apple-flavored foods! Some of the favorites were the apple jelly and apple juice!
During our writing time if we aren't working on letter formation, we are doing Writer's Workshop. This is a time for the boys and girls to build writing skills at their own pace. Right now we are learning procedures. As we begin to master the workshop procedures, I will meet with 1 group. each day to meet them at their individual writing stage and to help them improve their writing. They are free to choose their own writing topic during this time. The books they are working on will come home each 9 weeks.
Hands-on learning is an important part of our day. We use literacy centers (afternoon) to practice language arts skills; and we use math rotations (morning) to practice math skills. It's important to know the expectations during these times and we will spend a lot of time this week learning the expectations and procedures for literacy centers and math rotations.
Phew! We made it!! We spent a LOT of time going over expectations at school. Expectations is a big word that we will hear over and over and over and.... We learned expectations in the cafeteria, in the hallway, in the restrooms, in our classroom, and lining up, just to name a few! We will keep practicing school-wide expectations following our PBIS JETS model! We practiced writing our name with wipe off markers, using scissors, sharing toys, giving our bodies a break during quiet time and giving our brains a break with some movement/dancing (we also practiced counting with one of our movement videos)! Our week ended with a special visit from Pete the Cat! We read his book earlier in the week and went on a search around the school to find him (we also found where things were in our building as we were searching for him, like where nurses office is and where to take lunch money and things like that!)
